Over the last week, we have become aware that in an attempt to defraud immigrants, scammers are posing as U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) agents and calling immigrants claiming that there are problems with their immigration forms, such as their I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. These scammers are using "Caller ID Sppofing" to display misleading phone numbers to misinform victims that there is something wrong with their immigration forms, so that they can trick the victim into providing personal information. Scammers will call using a phone number or caller ID that will appear as an official USCIS number to intimidate the victim.
How to Differentiate a Scammer Call from an Actual Immigration Agency Call
If a someone calls and claims that they are from USCIS, Border Patrol, or any other immigration agency and they demand either personal information or payment, hang up. Remember, immigration authorities will never call you in a threatening manner, ask for identifying personal information, or ask for payments over the phone or via email. If those authorities do need a payment or to request additional personal information, they will mail you a letter. If USCIS does call you, they will provide a name of the agent speaking and they will ask for a call back.
You can report the scam call to the Federal Trade Commission or to the Iowa Attorney General Consumer Protection Division. It is important not to give your private personal information to someone you do not know.
